A Book On Sexual Medicine Calls Attention To 'The Couple'

Guidebook of Sexual Medicine was just released focusing on restoring "the couple" as the main unit for treatment of sexual dysfunction. This book also puts significant emphasis on the thorough evaluation of biological factors ( e.g., medical, hormonal, or effects of prescribed medications) and psychosocial factors (e.g., presence of depression, relational conflicts, or employment problems) before administering biological treatments such as the new oral agents, or psychosocial ones such as sex therapy.

Waguih William IsHak, M.D., FAPA, the editor and author of this book emphasizes the need for today's practitioners to go back to asking who, where, when, and how sexual relations are taking place in order to restore sexual health.

The Guidebook of Sexual Medicine, with a Foreword by Louis Ignarro, Ph.D., Noble Laureate, contains ten chapters and three appendices. It walks the reader through the Sexual Response Cycle, to the advanced model of evaluation of sexual dysfunction, effects of medical and substance problems on sexual issues, then into the main sexual disorders (desire, arousal, orgasm, and pain), ending with dedicated chapters on alternative medical interventions, and women's sexual health. Although the book is written originally for professionals, its easy-to-understand style makes it user-friendly for the general public.

Dr. IsHak serves on the faculty of University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and University of Southern California (USC) Schools of Medicine as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry. He sits on the California Medical Board as an expert reviewer and expert witness in psychiatry and sexual disorders. He has edited and written books, book chapters, and numerous scientific papers, received awards in medical teaching, and has 20 years of academic psychiatry experience culminating into to his current positions as Residency Program Director (training future psychiatrists), Clerkship Site Director for UCLA and USC (training future physicians) and Medical Director of Adult Outpatient Programs (treating mood and sexual disorders) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. Dr. IsHak, a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, is a diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry. He has been an invited reviewer and lecturer in sexual medicine throughout the U.S. and has appeared on CNN, NBC, KLA5, and Fox News.
